Early baby? and a name

Amanda texted me on Sunday, and said she had gone to the hospital because she was having contractions. The doctor said she was dilated to 1 cm. Yikes! The doctor said she needs to quit lifting Travis and take it a little easier. She said the baby is super busy and very healthy. Praise God for that! I really feel like he is going to come early. All signs seem to point to that. I am going to try and be ready by December 1st, so I 'm not caught off guard. That means there is only 2 months left!

Last week we decided to officially name him Ezekiel Philip May. I had not wanted to, since I wanted to wait to put a stake in the ground about a name until I saw him. But I am tired of calling him "the baby", and I wanted to personify him now. So I changed my mind about that. I feel very good about it, though. I love the name, and I really don't think there is going to be anything that comes along that I love better than Ezekiel.

Just waiting for Ezekiel!

How we found out we are going to be parents

I've been intending to tell this story for a long time. Actually, I already wrote it, but I didn't save it, so I lost it. I haven't taken the time to re-write it until now. So here is take two.

On Saturday, August 22nd, I was painting at Ben and Barbara's house, and I got a call from Dana. She asked if we could come over for dinner sometime soon. Nathanael was out of town at Discwood in Lake Tahoe that weekend, so the earliest that we could get together would be Sunday night, after services. So we made a plan to go over to their house.

To be honest, I was not exactly looking forward to what Dana wanted us to come over for. She did not say, so I did not know. But I figured that it was to tell us about the fundraiser event they would be attending that week, to tell us about the birth mothers she planned to visit with, and/or to ask us for more copies of our profile book, etc. I figured that we would come away from the night with more ARs, and with a message of "just keep waiting". And I wasn't looking forward to that message.

So we went over to their house after services on Sunday night. Christa was there, and we talked and ate dinner. Towards the end of dinner, Dana said, "Hey, I have a letter that I'd like you guys to read, it's from a birth mother". I assumed that it was a nice thank you letter that one of Dana's birth mothers had written to her that was particularly touching, and that she thought that we would enjoy. So of course we would read it. She went upstairs to get it, brought it down, and handed it to Nathanael. She asked him to read it out loud. So he started by saying, "It's addressed to us". My head snapped up from my dinner plate, and I said, "What??" I wondered who would be writing us a letter and sending it to Dana. It was at this time that I felt like something was going on, that we were being set up for something, like we were on Candid Camera or something. It didn't help me to not feel that way when I saw Christa holding a camera up. So Nathanael started reading. The author introduced herself as Amanda, and she described herself, and her life a little bit. As soon as she identified herself, this made the situation feel even stranger, since I knew who she was. We had met her last Christmas, when she was visiting Dana, after having given birth to a baby last November, which she placed for adoption. Dana has all her birth moms come out to visit her after giving birth. I remembered meeting her, but it was very briefly. I also knew of her because she and Brooke were friends, and Brooke would talk about Amanda when I talked on the phone with Brooke. So Amanda has been in my "network" of people that we've come to know of or about since we started our adoption journey. From time to time I would hear things about Amanda...how indignant she was when Brooke turned out not to be pregnant...how she wanted to find us a baby to adopt...she really seemed to like us, although I didn't know why, since we had met so briefly.

Back to the story. Nathanael kept reading the letter. Since I knew that she was pregnant again, as soon as she identified herself in the letter, the first thought that popped into my mind was, "Is she giving us her baby???" But I immediately pushed that thought away. It was ridiculous, and I knew she had decided to keep the baby. So I was puzzled about why she was writing to us, and explaining her life story. It was obviously leading up to something, but I didn't know what.

As Nathanael was reading, he kept pausing to interject comments. I had to refrain from saying, "Just keep reading!" And I think everyone else was thinking the same thing. I desperately wanted him to get to the culmination of the letter, I felt something huge was happening, I just didn't know what. Towards the end of the letter, Nathanael reads this:

"I told Dana months ago that I wanted to help ya'll find a baby this year...never imagined it could possibly be my very own. That being said, I have a very important question to ask the two of you...there is a special little boy, due to arrive right before Christmas, and I wanted to know if you would please consider opening your heart and home to this precious, deserving soul...and to adopt my baby boy? If you agree to raise this baby to love the Lord and follow His commandments, I give you my word that I will NEVER go back on my decision to choose adoption."

So that was it. Here was our dream about to be realized. I immediately began to cry, I was incredulous. I couldn't believe that THIS was what this letter was about. It seemed too amazing to be really happening. I had known that something was going on, but this was beyond my imagination. The fact that she had already decided, and it was really happening. We of course said yes! Dana texted her, apparently Amanda had been waiting anxiously for our answer. Lots of hugs and tears and laughter ensued! Dana had really set us up good, we truly had no idea what was going on.

Dana filled us in on how all this came to be. Apparently, Amanda had only just decided to place this baby for adoption a few days earlier. A dear friend of hers had written her a difficult email, saying that she thought Amanda was making the wrong choice for this baby by keeping it. As difficult as that was for Amanda to hear, she had already been thinking that. It seems like she just needed a little push, and it came from someone who loved her. I am eternally grateful to this person, as she is my friend too. I know she is reading this - thank you for your courage and wisdom and thoughtfulness and gentleness. I will always think of you as playing an instrumental role in bringing this adoption plan about, and you will always be special to me.

So Amanda wrote the letter, and sent it to Dana for us to read. And here we are, preparing to embark on the journey of parenthood for the first time, thanks to the selflessness and courage of one girl.

A rare time

We took Amanda to the airport this morning. Her entire visit was amazing. On Thursday, she and I went to Apple Hill and we shared a carmel apple sundae. She continued to be very inquisitive, asking me lots of questions about us and our lives. I can tell she pays attention and stores in her heart all of the things she reads and hears about us. I also had many questions for her about her and her family. We joined the large dinner party at the Carrozzas on Thursday night, to celebrate Carrie's birthday. I think all three of us (Nathanael, Amanda, and I) felt a little out of place, since we were the only ones there who were not family! I frequently found Amanda watching me, and I would smile at her. I'm sure I did the same thing. Sometimes I just wanted to stare at her for a long time, and really let it soak in that the baby she is pregnant with is the one that she is giving to us. But that would be rude, and very obvious. We should have taken pictures, so I can just stare at those. But we didn't. We talked about that last night. We didn't take any pictures while she was here, and we should have. We'll have to do it next time.

Friday night I picked her up and brought her to the house, and I made chicken and cheese calzones. The three of us went to Babies R Us, where we picked out a crib, and Amanda paid for it with her voucher. That was so nice of her. We got a very nice convertible crib with an espresso finish. Nathanael put it together today. When we got home, we played Lost Cities. I think Nathanael and I were both treasuring those moments, sitting at the table, just the three of us. I don't know that either of us grasped the significance of that time. It was such a rare, and unprecedented event (for us and our family and friends, at least), wherein we were able to spend time getting to know the birth mother of our child. I am storing these memories in my heart, and I will pull them out and brood over them often. I suspect that as the days and months and years go by, I will find them to be more and more special; as I grow to love our son, I will continue to grow in love for Amanda.

Dana told me this afternoon that she is feeling very good about her choice and about being here. She seemed like she was at peace with it. And Amanda herself told me that this trip has given her even more confidence in her decision. So I guess we passed the test. :) I know it did for us too. In retrospect, I think it was so good for all of us.

She texted me when she got to Houston. I'm sure she was very happy to see Travis, and to be home. I'm so glad that we will be keeping in touch, and that I have had the pleasure of spending time with that sweet girl.

Visit

Amanda is great! She is sweet and kind and fun to be around. She came over for dinner and bible class last night, and today, her and I went to Java City where Nathanael gave us a tour of the roasting plant. Then, we went crib shopping at Babies R Us. After bible class tonight, a bunch of us went to Big Spoon for yogurt. Amanda was having trouble breathing during bible class tonight; I kept looking over there and not seeing her and Dana where they were supposed to be sitting, and I was getting nervous, and imagining her going into labor or something. Hopefully she won't. It's a little too soon for that.

She told me today that the baby was quiet and not moving much while she was traveling, which was unusual, because he's usually moving a lot. He wasn't moving much during the day either, but then as soon as Nathanael started talking and teaching bible class, he was moving around like crazy! I thought that was amazing. I had her tell Nathanael that story when we got to Java City, and he told me later that he almost cried. I won't ever forget that.

Amanda is very inquisitive. She asks me lots of questions, she clearly wants to know more about us, in the same way that I want to know lots about her. When I am with her, I forget the things that I want to ask her, and then I remember them when she is not around. I should write them down.

Tomorrow the plan is to go to Apple Hill after I get off of work.

Exciting things

I have several stories that I plan to blog about. I know I am behind. However, so as not to get even further behind, I will continue blogging in the present time, and come back to the other stories when I feel like it. :)

Today is a big day! Amanda is coming to visit. I feel...excited and nervous. I've met her before, last Christmas, but it wasn't when she planned for us to adopt her baby. She is flying in this afternoon, and Dana is picking her up, and taking her out to lunch. When I am off work, I will go over there. She is staying until Saturday morning, and I have planned the whole week out. We will be having lots of fun.

I hope that we meet her expectations, and she is not disappointed. This is such an unprecedented event for us, and probably for most people. I am about to spend the next 4 days with the woman who will be giving birth to our child. Surreal.
