Holding Steady

Amanda had a doctor visit this morning. She's only dilated 1/2 a centimeter since Sunday, and I guess that is good news. She is measuring perfectly, and his heartbeat is great. She is still on strict bedrest for now. Her next doctor visit is on Monday.

I went to my grandmas house yesterday, and was sent home with a pack and play, some burp cloths, and a few articles of clothing. The pack and play is from a garage sale, but I set it up and examined it in the sunlight today, and it's in pretty good shape, so I guess I'll keep it. The burp cloths were new, of course.

We got our Ezekiel shirts in the mail this week. Hooray! They look great, we both love them. I'm so happy to have them already. We plan to wear them the day of his birth.

As far as legal/logistical matters go, I called Southwest airlines and found that they will need a medical waiver form if we will be flying with Ezekiel before his is 14 days old. Which apparently just means a note from a doctor giving him clearance to fly. So thats one more thing that I know now. I think I have everything squared away with the Texas attorney for now. It was a little frustrating there for a while, not knowing what I'm doing and getting different answers from different people. I'm really hoping that we are not going to get held up in Texas while California decides they need more paperwork.

Dan and Robyn sent us a cute little outfit from Gymboree that we got in the mail this week. Getting clothes for him is so fun. I love it.

Nesting?

what is this nesting business? Is that what I'm doing? I'm becoming obsessed with getting as much done as possible in our house before Ezekiel gets here. I desperately wish that Amanda was having an easy pregnancy. I think every day about how much emotional distress she is in, and I wish I could bear some of it for her. It surprises me how intensely I care for her, but it's because she is making her ultimate sacrifice for us. I wish she weren't suffering so, but if she weren't, then we wouldn't be where we are now. I just think it's brutal that she is not only dealing with the emotional pain of the adoption, but she is suffering in such a physical way right now as well. She is back home now, but has to take medication every 6 hours, and she has another doctor appointment on Wednesday. And thats all I know. It sucks to know barely anything. I feel so isolated. When we came home from church, and what I knew was that she was in the hospital again, I felt the need to get stuff done, so I frantically washed the dishes and started some laundry, and made dinner. I ordered her bracelet and made a list of all the stuff that I, now, urgently need to do tomorrow. I was looking for more things that I can do, that will then be done before he comes. I finished filing all the bills and organizing the bookshelves last week, and I worked in the backyard and the garage on Saturday. There are so many projects that I want to get done before he comes, and now I'm even more motivated to do as much as I can. I guess this frenzied get-as-much-done-as-I-can me is what they call "nesting", but that doesn't really seem to fit, to me. It's more like, crazy.

baby saga

Amanda is in the hospital again. Dana came up to me after services tonight and showed me a text message from her that says she is having contractions, she is in a lot of pain, they've given her Demorol but it makes things worse, her cervix is not opening, so that is good, and some other stuff that I can't remember. I think this is the third time she has visited the hospital in the last several weeks. This is turning out to be quite the rollercoaster ride, and I feel quite helpless. I texted her right after church to tell her we are praying for her and to let us know what is going on, but I haven't heard back from her, so I don't know what is happening.

Just waiting

So the lastest baby news is that Ezekiel is a rock star. He has been banging his head against Amanda's bladder tonight. He's a busy boy! I need to start making lodging arrangements for our stay in Houston, and I'm going to start a packing list for our trip next week. I'll probably hang a few things in his room next week. I've been obsessed with my registry lists, I want them to be perfect. I make changes to it as I read up on products in Consumer Reports Best Baby Products, to make sure we are registered for just the right products.

Exciting!

So things are pretty exciting around here. Amanda is on bedrest right now, for 4 weeks, as of a couple of days ago.

On October 10th, she emailed me and told me that she went to the hospital because she was having bad cramping and regular contractions. She was dehydrated, which was causing the contractions. Her cervix had closed up, but Ezekiel was transverse, and she had low blood pressure. But his vitals were great, and he is very healthy. They put her on bedrest for 4 days.

When she went back to the doctor on Tuesday, she was dilated to 2cm again. Doctor put her on bedrest for 4 weeks, so she can carry him to 34 weeks. So what happens after that? Does she get off bedrest and go into labor?? Yikes! I don't feel ready at all. We don't have nearly all the stuff we need for a baby. But I'm he'll come at just the right time, and although I was kind of freaking out inside on Tuesday morning for a little bit, I'm better now. I know we'll manage with whatever the circumstances turn out to be.

So we're still waiting anxiously for Ezekiel, who might be here earlier than we expected.

Dana came up to me and gave me a hug from Amanda tonight. She is apparently worried about us. As if she should be worried about us. We are the ones who are worried about her.

My mom bought him some more clothes last weekend, and Candee gave me a bag of clothes. My clothes stash is growing!

Early baby? and a name

Amanda texted me on Sunday, and said she had gone to the hospital because she was having contractions. The doctor said she was dilated to 1 cm. Yikes! The doctor said she needs to quit lifting Travis and take it a little easier. She said the baby is super busy and very healthy. Praise God for that! I really feel like he is going to come early. All signs seem to point to that. I am going to try and be ready by December 1st, so I 'm not caught off guard. That means there is only 2 months left!

Last week we decided to officially name him Ezekiel Philip May. I had not wanted to, since I wanted to wait to put a stake in the ground about a name until I saw him. But I am tired of calling him "the baby", and I wanted to personify him now. So I changed my mind about that. I feel very good about it, though. I love the name, and I really don't think there is going to be anything that comes along that I love better than Ezekiel.

Just waiting for Ezekiel!

How we found out we are going to be parents

I've been intending to tell this story for a long time. Actually, I already wrote it, but I didn't save it, so I lost it. I haven't taken the time to re-write it until now. So here is take two.

On Saturday, August 22nd, I was painting at Ben and Barbara's house, and I got a call from Dana. She asked if we could come over for dinner sometime soon. Nathanael was out of town at Discwood in Lake Tahoe that weekend, so the earliest that we could get together would be Sunday night, after services. So we made a plan to go over to their house.

To be honest, I was not exactly looking forward to what Dana wanted us to come over for. She did not say, so I did not know. But I figured that it was to tell us about the fundraiser event they would be attending that week, to tell us about the birth mothers she planned to visit with, and/or to ask us for more copies of our profile book, etc. I figured that we would come away from the night with more ARs, and with a message of "just keep waiting". And I wasn't looking forward to that message.

So we went over to their house after services on Sunday night. Christa was there, and we talked and ate dinner. Towards the end of dinner, Dana said, "Hey, I have a letter that I'd like you guys to read, it's from a birth mother". I assumed that it was a nice thank you letter that one of Dana's birth mothers had written to her that was particularly touching, and that she thought that we would enjoy. So of course we would read it. She went upstairs to get it, brought it down, and handed it to Nathanael. She asked him to read it out loud. So he started by saying, "It's addressed to us". My head snapped up from my dinner plate, and I said, "What??" I wondered who would be writing us a letter and sending it to Dana. It was at this time that I felt like something was going on, that we were being set up for something, like we were on Candid Camera or something. It didn't help me to not feel that way when I saw Christa holding a camera up. So Nathanael started reading. The author introduced herself as Amanda, and she described herself, and her life a little bit. As soon as she identified herself, this made the situation feel even stranger, since I knew who she was. We had met her last Christmas, when she was visiting Dana, after having given birth to a baby last November, which she placed for adoption. Dana has all her birth moms come out to visit her after giving birth. I remembered meeting her, but it was very briefly. I also knew of her because she and Brooke were friends, and Brooke would talk about Amanda when I talked on the phone with Brooke. So Amanda has been in my "network" of people that we've come to know of or about since we started our adoption journey. From time to time I would hear things about Amanda...how indignant she was when Brooke turned out not to be pregnant...how she wanted to find us a baby to adopt...she really seemed to like us, although I didn't know why, since we had met so briefly.

Back to the story. Nathanael kept reading the letter. Since I knew that she was pregnant again, as soon as she identified herself in the letter, the first thought that popped into my mind was, "Is she giving us her baby???" But I immediately pushed that thought away. It was ridiculous, and I knew she had decided to keep the baby. So I was puzzled about why she was writing to us, and explaining her life story. It was obviously leading up to something, but I didn't know what.

As Nathanael was reading, he kept pausing to interject comments. I had to refrain from saying, "Just keep reading!" And I think everyone else was thinking the same thing. I desperately wanted him to get to the culmination of the letter, I felt something huge was happening, I just didn't know what. Towards the end of the letter, Nathanael reads this:

"I told Dana months ago that I wanted to help ya'll find a baby this year...never imagined it could possibly be my very own. That being said, I have a very important question to ask the two of you...there is a special little boy, due to arrive right before Christmas, and I wanted to know if you would please consider opening your heart and home to this precious, deserving soul...and to adopt my baby boy? If you agree to raise this baby to love the Lord and follow His commandments, I give you my word that I will NEVER go back on my decision to choose adoption."

So that was it. Here was our dream about to be realized. I immediately began to cry, I was incredulous. I couldn't believe that THIS was what this letter was about. It seemed too amazing to be really happening. I had known that something was going on, but this was beyond my imagination. The fact that she had already decided, and it was really happening. We of course said yes! Dana texted her, apparently Amanda had been waiting anxiously for our answer. Lots of hugs and tears and laughter ensued! Dana had really set us up good, we truly had no idea what was going on.

Dana filled us in on how all this came to be. Apparently, Amanda had only just decided to place this baby for adoption a few days earlier. A dear friend of hers had written her a difficult email, saying that she thought Amanda was making the wrong choice for this baby by keeping it. As difficult as that was for Amanda to hear, she had already been thinking that. It seems like she just needed a little push, and it came from someone who loved her. I am eternally grateful to this person, as she is my friend too. I know she is reading this - thank you for your courage and wisdom and thoughtfulness and gentleness. I will always think of you as playing an instrumental role in bringing this adoption plan about, and you will always be special to me.

So Amanda wrote the letter, and sent it to Dana for us to read. And here we are, preparing to embark on the journey of parenthood for the first time, thanks to the selflessness and courage of one girl.
