R is for RAD

I'm experimenting with my own little series called "R is for RAD". It will be reminiscent of Oprah's "my favorite things", only better and radder.

I have a tshirt that I bought to wear the first time I picked Nathanael up at the airport to come visit me in Sacramento. It was only a few weeks after we first met. I remember how much he liked my shirt, which said "R is for RAD". He had told me at camp that he was going to bring Rad back, and I wanted to help.

And so, in honor of my first post of my new series, my first favorite (or Rad) thing is the word Rad.

~~~
I have 2 shirts in my closet that have the word Rad on them. The aforementioned, and one that says, "I put the R in Rad". I wear this one selectively.
Ezekiel, even at his young age, has 2 onesies that have the word Rad on them. One says, "Rad like Dad", and the other one says, "My Dad is Rad". If this is not evidence that we did what we set out to do, then I don't know what is. (Or, it could just be coincidental, in that Rad rhymes with Dad.)
Urban Dictionary defines Rad as
An abbreviation of 'radical'--a term made popular by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Still primarily used by people on the West Coast who find words like 'cool', 'awesome', and 'tight' to be tired and overused; 'rad' is generally considered to be a much higher praise than the aforementioned superlatives. Also used as a general expression of awe.
But here is my favorite definition of Rad
really cool, but in a more subtle way. as opposed to extreme orawesome. one of the highest compliments you can give someone. being rad is like being cool without having to work for it. it's like a natural coolness.
One of my favorite uses of the word Rad
Rad Hair Day:
When you wake up and your hair is just plain awesome, all on its own, for no particular reason. No matter how much it rains, you sweat, or you get punched in the face, your hair remains rad until the end of the allocated 24 hour period.
Less interesting uses of the word Rad
*Rite Aid Corporation (Public, NYSE: RAD)
*Rapid Application Development (RAD) - refers to a type of software development methodology that uses minimal planning in favor of rapid prototyping (according to wikipedia)
Also noteworthy is Rad, the movie, made in 1986. It is "the story of one young man, Cru Jones, who has the intensity and desire to win a BMX race called Helltrack" (according to IMDB)
And finally, and perhaps best of all, is rad., the musical artist, whose work is described as, "a funk show spiced with latin flavors". I like what she has to say.
Until tomorrow,
Misty
